Why Athinios is the hardest arrival on Santorini

Athinios is not a gentle introduction to the island. It is a narrow concrete shelf at the base of a 300-metre caldera cliff, with a single switchback road climbing out of it. There is no terminal building, no waiting hall, and very little shade. When a large ferry docks, several hundred people disembark within about fifteen minutes into a space that was never designed for them, all competing for the same handful of vehicles. Coach operators load first, then pre-booked transfers, then whatever taxis have come down for the arrival — usually a few, occasionally none. Passengers without a booking regularly wait well over an hour, and in high season some end up walking up the switchbacks. This is the single strongest argument for pre-booking a transfer anywhere on Santorini.

How long does Athinios to Oia take?

Plan on 40–50 minutes. The distance is around 25 km but the first section is the slow part: the road out of the port climbs the cliff in a series of tight hairpins shared with coaches, and nothing moves quickly until you reach the top. If your ferry arrives at the same time as another, add 10–15 minutes simply to clear the port road. Ferries from Piraeus, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Ios and Crete all use Athinios.

Finding your driver at the pier

Send us your ferry operator and sailing time when you book. We monitor the arrival, and Aegean ferry schedules move often enough that this matters — a ferry running ninety minutes late is an ordinary day in the Cyclades, not an exception. Your driver waits in the pier area holding a Marinakis Tours sign with your name. Because the port is chaotic on arrival, your confirmation includes a photo of the meeting point and a direct WhatsApp line to the driver. Do not follow the crowd toward the coaches — walk clear of the ramp and look for the sign.

Arriving into Oia with luggage

Oia's centre is pedestrianised and a great many of its cave hotels sit down the caldera face, reached only by stepped paths. No vehicle reaches those doors. Give us your hotel name at booking and we will drop you at the closest vehicle access point and show you the correct path down. Most caldera-side properties will send a porter if you give them an arrival window — worth arranging by email before you travel, especially after a long ferry crossing.

Leaving Santorini by ferry

Departures from Athinios need more buffer than arrivals. Ferries board early and the port road is a single lane in each direction, so a queue of arriving coaches can trap departing traffic. From Oia, leave 2 hours before a high-season sailing and 90 minutes off-season. Book the return with your arrival — Athinios departure slots are among the first things to sell out in August.
