What Athinios is actually like
Athinios is Santorini’s commercial ferry port, below the caldera, connected to the island by a winding road. It is separate from the old port below Fira used by cruise tenders. Vehicle demand and road traffic can increase around ferry arrivals. Check any taxi or app pickup instructions before disembarking, or arrange a confirmed transfer with your sailing details, luggage count and destination. Allow extra time for departures and follow your ferry operator’s boarding instructions.
- No terminal, no waiting hall, minimal shade
- Several hundred passengers disembark in ~15 minutes
- One switchback road serves the whole port
- Check current taxi and app pickup options

Finding your driver at the pier
Send us your ferry operator and sailing time when you book. We monitor the arrival, a ferry running ninety minutes late is an ordinary day in the Aegean, not an exception, and it costs you nothing on a booked transfer. Your driver waits in the pier area with a Marinakis Tours sign carrying your name. Because the port is genuinely chaotic on arrival, your confirmation includes a photograph of the meeting point and a direct WhatsApp line to the driver. The practical tip: do not follow the crowd toward the coaches. Walk clear of the ramp and look for the sign.
- Ferry tracking included; late sailings covered at no charge
- Named sign plus a photo of the meeting point in your confirmation
- Direct WhatsApp line to your driver
- Help with luggage on the steep port ramp
- Free child seats on request
Which ferries arrive here
Athinios handles all the large vehicle ferries and high-speed catamarans: Piraeus (Athens), Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Ios, Milos and Crete. It is not the same place as the old port below Fira, which serves cruise tenders and small excursion boats and is reached by cable car or the donkey path. If your ticket says Athinios, you are arriving at the commercial port on the west coast, roughly 20 to 30 minutes from Fira. Wind matters here. The meltemi blows hard from roughly July through September, and high-speed catamarans are the first sailings cancelled when it does. Conventional ferries usually keep running. Build a day of slack into island-hopping plans.
Combining your transfer with a tour
Arriving mid-morning with a hotel check-in at 15:00 is a common and slightly awkward position. Rather than sitting on your bags, several guests book a half-day private tour straight from the port, luggage stays in the vehicle, you see the south of the island or a winery, and you arrive at your hotel when the room is actually ready. The same works in reverse on departure day: a morning tour finishing at Athinios in time for an afternoon sailing. Ask us to coordinate the two as one booking.
Departing by ferry
Departures need more buffer than arrivals. Ferries board early and the port road is a single lane each way, so arriving coaches can trap departing traffic on the switchbacks. From Fira, leave 90 minutes before a high-season sailing. From Oia, allow two hours. Book the return with your arrival, Athinios departure slots are among the first to sell out in August.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a Santorini port transfer?
From €35 shared or €50 private to Fira, and €60 shared or €80 private to Oia, for up to 3 passengers with €5 per extra passenger. All prices are fixed at booking.
Where do I meet my driver at Athinios?
In the pier area, holding a Marinakis Tours sign with your name. Your confirmation includes a photo of the meeting point. Walk clear of the ferry ramp rather than following the crowd toward the coaches.
How long from Athinios to Oia?
40–50 minutes. The hairpin climb out of the port is the slow part; add 10–15 minutes if two ferries dock together. Fira is 20–30 minutes.
Are there taxis at Athinios port?
Taxi availability and queues vary around ferry arrivals. Check the current wait and agreed pickup point with the provider. For a Marinakis transfer, share your ferry details and wait for the team’s confirmation.
What if my ferry is delayed?
We track the sailing and adjust at no extra cost. Aegean ferry delays are routine and already factored into how we schedule drivers.
Is Athinios the same as the old port?
No. Athinios is the commercial ferry port on the west coast. The old port below Fira serves cruise tenders and excursion boats and is reached by cable car or the donkey path.
Can you handle large luggage?
Yes. Mercedes Sprinters take multiple large suitcases and our drivers help on the steep port ramp. Tell us your bag count when booking so we assign the right vehicle.
