Santorini is small, about 76 km², and packs in more than feels reasonable. Caldera views, volcanic beaches, Bronze Age ruins, 18 wineries, and some of the best fish tavernas in Greece, all on a single crescent of cliff. After 25 years running tours here, these are the ten experiences we keep sending people to.
1. Watch the Sunset From Oia (But Not From the Castle)
Yes, the Oia sunset deserves its reputation. The sun drops behind the caldera, the cliffs catch the last copper light, and everything goes quiet for about ninety seconds. The problem is the castle viewpoint, which fills up two hours before sunset and turns into a polite shoving match.
Try the Imerovigli terrace instead, same view, fraction of the crowd. The cliff path between Fira and Firostefani works well too. If you want the full effect, watch it from the deck of a catamaran with a glass of Assyrtiko in your hand. We can book any of these, just ask.
2. See the Caldera From a Helicopter
From the ground you get a slice. From 500 metres up you get the whole shape: the 12-km caldera arc, the smoking crater of Nea Kameni, the three coloured beaches lined up on the south coast, the basket-trained vineyards rolling east. Ten minutes is enough to understand the scale of the eruption.
Flights run 10 to 60 minutes. The shorter ones cover the caldera and Oia. The 60-minute loop adds Thirasia, the interior villages and the south coast. Helipad is private, flights are weather-dependent, and they pair well with a wine tasting or a catamaran cruise later in the day.
3. Taste Volcanic Wines at the Wineries
Santorini wine is unusual for a real reason: volcanic soil, salt-laden wind, almost no rainfall, and a grape (Assyrtiko) trained low to the ground in a coiled basket called a kouloura. The result is a bone-dry white with mineral edge and citrus, plus a sweet amber Vinsanto aged for years in oak.
Our wine tasting tours visit 2–3 wineries, usually some combination of Santo Wines, Venetsanos, Estate Argyros, Gavalas or Hatzidakis, depending on the day. Tours run from €100 per person with an English-speaking guide, transport in an air-conditioned van, and all tastings included.
4. Sail the Caldera on a Catamaran
The best view of Santorini is from the water. A catamaran day takes you under the cliffs, past the hot springs at Palea Kameni, along the south coast to White Beach and Red Beach, with a Greek BBQ on board and an open bar. Most days include 2–3 swim stops in spots you can't reach by car.
The sunset cruise is the one people remember. You're already on the water when the light goes, anchored off Oia, with the cliffs lit copper above you. From €100 per person on shared cruises. Private charters are good for honeymoons, proposals and anything else worth doing properly.
5. Walk the Villages, Oia, Fira, Pyrgos, Imerovigli, Megalochori, Akrotiri
Each village does something different. Oia is photogenic and expensive. Fira is loud and convenient. Imerovigli is quiet and high. Pyrgos is medieval, fortified, with 360° views from the castle and some of the best food on the island (Selene is the famous one). Megalochori is wine country, small Cycladic houses and walking distance to three wineries. Akrotiri has the Minoan dig site and Red Beach. A full day with a driver covers four or five of them without the parking headaches.
6. Walk the Volcanic Beaches, Red, Black, White
Forget golden sand. Red Beach (near Akrotiri) sits below a crimson cliff that drops straight into turquoise water. Kamari and Perissa are long black-sand strips with sunbeds, tavernas and watersports. Vlychada has wind-carved white cliffs that look almost sculpted. White Beach is reachable only by boat from Red, and it's worth the 5-minute ride.
Each beach has its own colour and its own crowd. Hit at least two for the contrast. Our catamaran cruises stop at White Beach and a couple of swim spots you can't get to by road.
7. Visit the Lost Atlantis Experience
Megalochori, 700 m², 9D cinema, holograms and 3D projections, all built around the theory that the Atlantis Plato wrote about was the Bronze Age civilisation buried here by the eruption around 1600 BC. Adults €15, children €10. One hour, easy parking. We can add it as an extra stop on any full-day tour.
8. Akrotiri, The Pompeii of the Aegean
The Minoan town of Akrotiri was buried by the eruption around 1600 BC. Unlike Pompeii, the people seem to have left in time, no bodies, but the frescoes, pottery and three-storey houses are still standing. The site is covered (so it's fine in any weather) and takes an hour or two with a guide. Pair it with the Red Beach next door for a half-day in the south.
9. Eat Properly, Fava, Tomatokeftedes, White Aubergine
Santorini's cherry tomatoes are famously sweet (it's the volcanic soil and the lack of rain). They turn into tomatokeftedes, fritters that taste nothing like the photo. Fava is the other essential: a yellow split-pea purée with onions, capers and olive oil. White aubergine is milder than the purple kind and usually grilled. For caldera views, eat in Fira or Imerovigli. For value, eat in Pyrgos or Megalochori. Selene (Pyrgos), Metaxi Mas (Exo Gonia) and To Krinaki (Finikia) are the names we keep recommending.
10. Use a Private Driver, Not a Rental
Roads here are narrow, parking in Oia or Fira in July is a small nightmare, and a single fender-bender will eat a day. Our private transfers cost €30 shared / €40 private from the airport, English-speaking drivers, fixed prices, no surprises. For full days, the same drivers run guided tours between villages, wineries and beaches. We've been driving these roads since 2000, we know which goat track gets you around the bus queue at Oia.
Planning Your Trip
Best months are May, June, late September and early October, warm enough to swim, half the crowds, lower prices. July and August are peak everything. For helicopter flights, catamaran cruises and wine tours, book at least two weeks ahead in summer.
