Getting to Santorini is straightforward once you know which route makes sense for you. Direct flight from Athens (45 minutes), seasonal flight from somewhere in Europe, or a ferry from Piraeus or another Cycladic island. Here's the practical breakdown for 2026, schedules, transfer times, and the things people usually wish they'd known.
Flights to Santorini (JTR Airport)
Santorini National Airport (JTR) takes year-round domestic flights from Athens, 45 minutes, multiple times a day, with Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air and Sky Express. Between May and October there are also seasonal direct flights from London, Paris, Rome, Milan, Frankfurt, Zurich, Vienna and Amsterdam.
The airport is small and gets congested at peak hours. Arrive 90 minutes ahead for domestic flights, 2 hours for international. Limited seating, one small café, one duty-free. The terminal is about 6 km southeast of Fira, the capital.
Tip: book an early morning flight from Athens and ask for a window seat on the left side. As the plane descends, the caldera opens up under you, full arc, volcano, villages on the cliff. It's the best free view in Greece.
Ferries to Santorini
Ferries are the slower, more theatrical way in. High-speed from Piraeus (Athens) takes about 4.5–5 hours; the conventional ferry is 7–8 hours and significantly cheaper. June to September there are several departures per day from Piraeus.
You can also island-hop in: Mykonos (2–3 hours), Naxos (1.5–2 hours), Paros (2–3 hours), Ios (35–50 minutes) and Heraklion on Crete (about 2 hours). If you're building a Cyclades trip, Santorini works well at the start or the end.

One thing to know: ferries dock at Athinios Port, not the Old Port in Fira. Athinios sits at the bottom of a steep switchback road, and the road up is busy when several ferries land at once. Pre-book a transfer, taxis at the port are limited and the queue in July gets long.
Airport Transfers, From JTR to Your Hotel

Athinios is the busiest arrival point on Santorini, especially when two or three ferries land together. The road up the cliff is steep and full of switchbacks, not fun with luggage or small kids. Pre-book.
Shared transfers from the port start at €35, private at €50. Driver waits at the dock with your name, helps with bags, gets you up the hill without queueing. Ride-share apps don't work reliably here, and in summer the taxi queue can run 30–60 minutes.
Getting Around Santorini, Private Transfers and Tours
The easiest way to see the island is with a private driver. Fixed prices, door-to-door, no parking headaches in Oia or Fira, no queueing for the bus in 35° heat. Our drivers grew up here and know every shortcut.
For a one-way hop between villages, a bus or private transfer works. For a whole day, the same drivers run guided private tours, 3 to 8 hours, covering Fira, Oia, Pyrgos, the wineries, Akrotiri, the Lost Atlantis museum and as many beaches as you want to fit in. Book once, relax for the day.
Island Hopping From Santorini
Santorini is well-placed for Cyclades hopping. Mykonos is 2–3 hours by high-speed, Naxos 1.5–2, Paros 2–3, Ios 35–50 minutes. Day trips to Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni (the volcanic islands inside the caldera) leave from the Old Port in Fira or come included on most catamaran cruises.
