Routes and flight times

Flights depart from Santorini Airport (JTR). A 20-minute panoramic circuit is the most-booked option and covers the whole caldera rim — Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia along the cliff, then out over Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni before returning down the east coast. Twenty minutes sounds brief and is not: the island is only 18 km long, and you cross the entire caldera in about four.

Longer 30 and 60-minute flights add Thirassia, the southern coastline past Akrotiri and the Red Beach cliffs, and on clear days a run out toward Ios or Anafi. Island-to-island transfers to Mykonos, Athens and the rest of the Cyclades are also available and are, for a group of four or five with luggage, less absurd than the price first suggests when set against a missed ferry connection.

What it costs

Helicopter charter is priced per aircraft, not per seat, so the cost splits across everyone on board. A panoramic flight starts from around €1,800 for up to 5 passengers; Santorini to Mykonos is from €3,800 and Santorini to Athens from €5,500. Exact pricing moves with season, aircraft availability and fuel, which is why the table above quotes on request rather than pretending otherwise.

Weather, and why we say this upfront

Helicopters do not fly in strong wind, and Santorini gets a lot of it. The meltemi blows hard from roughly July through September and is the single most common reason a flight moves or cancels. Operators make the call on the morning, and it is a safety decision rather than a negotiable one. Cancelled flights are refunded or rescheduled in full.

Practical consequence: book early in your stay rather than on your last day, so there is room to move it. Booking requires at least 48 hours' notice. All flights are operated by EASA-certified partner operators — we arrange and coordinate them, we do not fly the aircraft ourselves.

Helicopter tour questions

How much is a helicopter tour in Santorini?
From around €1,800 for a panoramic flight, priced per aircraft for up to 5 passengers rather than per seat. Santorini to Mykonos transfers start from €3,800 and Santorini to Athens from €5,500. Exact pricing varies with season and aircraft availability.
How long is a Santorini helicopter tour?
Options run from 10 to 60 minutes. The 20-minute panoramic circuit is the most popular and covers the full caldera rim, Oia and both volcano islets. Longer flights add Thirassia and the southern coastline.
Where do helicopter flights depart from?
Santorini Airport (JTR) on the east coast. We can arrange a transfer to the airport from anywhere on the island as part of the booking.
How far in advance should I book?
At least 48 hours, and preferably early in your stay rather than on your last day. Wind cancellations are common in meltemi season and you want room to reschedule.
What happens if the flight is cancelled for weather?
Full refund or reschedule. Helicopters do not fly in strong wind and the operator makes that call on the morning — it is a safety decision, not a negotiable one. The meltemi blows hard from July through September.
Can children fly?
Yes. Infants from age 2 can fly on a lap and children from 5 in their own seat. Every passenger counts toward the aircraft's capacity regardless of age.
Is there a weight limit?
Yes — helicopters are weight-and-balance sensitive and the operator needs each passenger's weight in advance to seat the aircraft correctly. It is a routine safety requirement, asked of everyone.
Who operates the flights?
EASA-certified partner operators. Marinakis Tours arranges and coordinates the booking and your transfers around it; we do not operate the aircraft ourselves.
