Why the caldera is worth seeing from the water
Standing on the rim in Oia or Fira, you cannot see the thing you are standing on. From the middle of the bay the scale finally registers — 300 metres of striped volcanic cliff curving away on three sides, the villages reduced to a thin white line along the top, and the two black lava islets sitting in the flooded crater where a mountain used to be.
It is also the only way to reach several of the island's better swim spots. White Beach, beneath pale cliffs near Akrotiri, has no land access at all. Red Beach is crowded and pebbly from the shore and far better from the water. The hot springs off Palea Kameni are a boat proposition by definition.

Day cruise or sunset sail?
Both run about five hours and cover broadly the same route, so the choice is about light and crowds rather than itinerary.
The day cruise departs late morning and gives you the most swimming time, the warmest water and the quietest boats. It suits families and anyone whose main interest is being in the sea rather than photographing it.
The sunset sail departs mid-afternoon and returns along the caldera cliff as the light goes, which is the classic Santorini photograph taken from the one vantage point with no crowd in it. It is more popular, costs a little more, and the swim stops are shorter and cooler. Couples generally want the sunset; families generally prefer the day.

What is included on a Santorini catamaran cruise?
Most cruises include hotel transfer, snorkel gear, towels, Greek BBQ or lunch, and an open bar (wine, beer, soft drinks). Exact inclusions vary by boat tier.
Sunset or day cruise — which is better?
Sunset sails are the classic caldera photo moment. Day cruises give more swim time at Red Beach, White Beach and the hot springs, and are usually less crowded.
Can I book a fully private catamaran?
Yes — private catamaran charter from €800 per boat for your group only. Ideal for proposals, honeymoons and families.
How long is a Santorini catamaran cruise?
About 5 hours for both day and sunset sailings, covering the caldera crossing, two or three swim stops and a meal on board.
Where do the boats stop?
Typically Red Beach and White Beach for snorkelling — White Beach is reachable only by boat — plus the hot springs off Palea Kameni. Sunset sailings return along the caldera cliff past Oia.
Are the hot springs actually hot?
Warm rather than hot, more like a lukewarm bath. You swim 50–100 metres from the boat through cold water to reach them, and the iron in the water permanently stains light swimwear — wear dark colours.
Do I need to be able to swim?
Not to take the cruise, but the swim stops are in open water from the boat rather than off a beach. Life jackets and floats are on board and you are welcome to stay aboard for any stop.
Will the cruise be cancelled if it is windy?
Sometimes. The meltemi blows hard from July through September and sailings are cancelled or rerouted on safety grounds. You are refunded or rescheduled — book early in your stay so there is room to move it.
Do catamaran cruises get seasick passengers?
Catamarans are considerably more stable than monohulls and the caldera is sheltered, so it is calmer than an open-sea sailing. If you are prone to it, take something before boarding and pick a day cruise over the sunset sail.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes, and children 4–12 are half price with under-4s free. The swim stops are supervised and the boats carry child life jackets. Tell us ages when booking.
