The answer, at a glance

Compare KTEL buses, licensed taxis and Uber taxi requests, rental vehicles, walking routes and pre-booked transfers. The right choice depends on your village, luggage, budget and travel deadline.

Is there Uber in Santorini?

Uber lists taxi requests in Santorini, including the airport. Check the app for current vehicles, pickup instructions and pricing; availability can vary.

Do you need a car in Santorini?

Not essential, but useful for stays of three days or more. The bus network is hub-and-spoke through Fira, so cross-island journeys are slow. The trade-off is parking, which is very limited in Oia and Fira.

The shape of the problem

Santorini’s main villages sit along the caldera rim or near its eastern and southern beaches. Road traffic, hotel access and bus connections matter as much as distance.

Many KTEL services connect through Fira. Check the operator’s current timetable for your actual journey. Licensed taxis and Uber taxi requests provide other options; use a current quote and availability check rather than assuming a car will be ready at a busy arrival or sunset.

The public bus

KTEL runs the island's buses and they are cheap, reasonably frequent in summer, and perfectly good for daytime travel between Fira and the main villages. Fares run roughly €2 to €3 depending on distance, paid in cash to a conductor on board.

Routes radiate from the Fira central terminal to Oia, Kamari, Perissa, Perivolos, Akrotiri, Athinios port and the airport. In peak season the busiest routes run every 20 to 30 minutes; in winter, a few times a day.

The limitations are real. Buses fill completely at peak times, the Oia sunset return is notoriously oversubscribed and you may watch two go past. Luggage space is minimal and contested. Services thin sharply after about 22:00 and in the off-season. And the hub-and-spoke design means cross-island journeys take far longer than the map suggests.

Typical bus journeys from Fira
RouteTimeApprox fare
Fira → Oia25–30 min€2–3
Fira → Kamari20 min€2
Fira → Perissa25–30 min€2–3
Fira → Akrotiri30 min€2–3
Fira → Airport15–20 min€2
Fira → Athinios port20–30 min€2–3

Timetables shift by season. Check at the Fira terminal rather than relying on an app.

Taxis: fewer than you think

Uber lists taxi requests in Santorini, including the airport. Check the app for current vehicles, pickup instructions and pricing; availability can vary.

For an individual journey, compare the pickup location, current wait, passenger and luggage capacity, and payment method. For a ferry, flight or timed activity, confirm the arrangements ahead and leave a travel buffer.

Renting a car, ATV or scooter

A rental gives you the freedom the bus network does not, and for a stay of three days or more it is often the best value option on the island. It is also the one with the most caveats.

Parking is the real constraint. Oia and Fira have very limited parking and both fill by mid-morning in season; the caldera villages are largely pedestrianised. Roads are narrow, steep and shared with coaches, and the descent to Ammoudi below Oia is genuinely intimidating for inexperienced drivers.

ATVs and quads are ubiquitous and heavily marketed. They are also involved in a disproportionate share of accidents here, riders in shorts and sandals on loose gravel is a bad combination. If you rent one, wear the helmet and cover your legs.

You will need a valid licence appropriate to the vehicle. Check the required documents for your issuing country with the rental provider and official guidance before booking.

  • Best value for stays of 3+ days if you are comfortable driving
  • Parking in Oia and Fira fills by mid-morning in season
  • Check licence and document requirements for your issuing country
  • ATVs are popular and disproportionately dangerous, wear the helmet
  • Book ahead in August; the fleet genuinely runs out

Private transfers and drivers

For arrivals, departures and timed activities, arrange the pickup point, luggage requirements and travel buffer before you go.

Marinakis offers fixed route-price transfers and private sightseeing tours of 3 to 8 hours. Tour starting prices apply to two guests and increase with group size. Transfer prices cover up to three passengers with €5 per additional passenger. Submit your date and arrival details; the team confirms availability.

  • Fixed price agreed at booking, no meter, no surge
  • Flight and ferry tracking with 60 minutes of free waiting
  • Named sign at airport arrivals and the Athinios pier
  • Private tours 3–8 hours, with prices by duration and group size
  • Free child seats on request

Walking, and the cable car

The caldera rim path from Fira through Firostefani and Imerovigli to Oia is walkable and one of the best things on the island, 10 km, 3 to 4 hours, largely paved for the first third. Within villages, walking is generally the only option, since the centres are pedestrianised.

Be realistic about the terrain. Santorini is built on a cliff and stairs are everywhere; a great many hotels are reached only on foot down stepped paths.

The Fira cable car connects the town to the old port in three minutes and is the sane way down to the volcano and catamaran boats. The alternative is 588 steps shared with donkeys, which is unpleasant underfoot and, as regards riding the donkeys themselves, an animal welfare issue that has drawn sustained criticism. Take the cable car, or walk.

How much are buses in Santorini?

Roughly €2–€3 per journey, paid in cash on board. Routes run from the Fira central terminal to Oia, Kamari, Perissa, Akrotiri, the airport and Athinios port.

How do you get from Kamari to Perissa?

By bus, via Fira, there is no direct route despite the two beaches sitting on either side of the same rock. It is roughly an hour each way. A taxi or private driver takes about 20 minutes over the hill.

Can I use the cable car in Fira?

Yes. It runs between Fira town and the old port in about three minutes and is the practical way to reach volcano and catamaran boats. The alternative is 588 steps shared with donkeys.

Are ATVs safe in Santorini?

Choose a vehicle you are licensed and comfortable to drive. Roads can be narrow and steep; wear the required protective equipment and follow the rental operator’s instructions.

How do I get back from Oia after sunset?

Check the current KTEL return timetable and allow for queues. A taxi, app request or confirmed transfer is another option; arrange the pickup location before leaving the village.
