In the morning, visit Knossos and its famous palace, built by King Minos 4.000 years ago. It is said that this palace is the source for the myth of the Labyrinth. In An elaborate mazelike structure was created for King Minos to hold the creature Minotaur, half man and half bull. Several of the stones on the walls have double bladed axes carved on them. The axe is an apotropaic and belief was that the presence of the axe on an object would prevent it from being killed. In reality, the palace is an amazing piece of architecture that is an extensive twirling maze of workrooms, living rooms, and storerooms. Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archeological site in Crete. An interesting finding by Bronze Age scholars is the practice of human sacrifice, which was never known to exist in Crete, but was confirmed as a common practice at Knossos Palace. Knossos Palace is a MUST see; the enchantment, the history, and the myth. The palace is a few km from Heraklion and covers more than 20.000 square meters. Continue with a visit of the town of Heraklion, with time for lunch and a short walk through its shopping centre.
