Private Driver in Santorini

A vehicle and an English-speaking local driver at your disposal, priced per vehicle from €220 for three hours. On an island with fewer than 40 taxis, no Uber and almost no parking where you want it, this is usually the cheapest way to actually move around.

Why hiring a driver beats the alternatives here

Santorini punishes improvised transport in a way most destinations do not. There are fewer than 40 licensed taxis for the whole island and no Uber, Bolt or Lyft. The public bus network is hub-and-spoke through Fira, so getting from Kamari to Perissa — two beaches either side of the same rock — means a round trip via the capital. Rental cars solve the flexibility problem and create a parking one: Oia and Fira fill by mid-morning in season and both village centres are pedestrianised. A driver removes all three problems at once. You get dropped where the car cannot park, collected where there is no taxi, and you do not spend your afternoon circling for a space.

  • Under 40 licensed taxis island-wide, no ride-hailing apps
  • Buses radiate from Fira — cross-island journeys are slow
  • Oia and Fira parking fills by mid-morning in season
  • Drop-off and pickup at pedestrianised village edges

What people actually use a driver for

Not always sightseeing. A fair share of our private hire is simply logistics that would otherwise ruin a day. Wine roads are the most common — Santo Wines, Venetsanos, Gavalas and Argyros are spread across the island's middle and there is no sensible bus between them, plus somebody has to not drink. Beach days at Perissa or Vlychada where you want collecting at 18:00 rather than waiting for a bus. Dinner in Oia, where parking is genuinely hopeless and the walk back to Fira is not a walk. Airport and ferry runs with luggage. And photography routes along the caldera, where being able to stop for four minutes at the right ledge is the whole point.

  • Winery hopping — no bus route and someone has to drive
  • Beach days with a collection time you choose
  • Dinner drop-offs in Oia, where parking is effectively impossible
  • Airport and Athinios port runs with luggage
  • Caldera photography routes with short unscheduled stops
  • Cruise days with a hard all-aboard deadline

Driver hire or a guided private tour?

The vehicles and the drivers are the same. The difference is how much structure you want. Hire a driver when you know roughly what you want to do and mainly need transport and local judgement — which beach is sheltered today, which viewpoint the coaches have not reached yet, where to eat that is not a tourist menu. Book a private tour when you want the day designed. Our drivers are driver-hosts rather than licensed archaeological guides: they will tell you about the island, the villages, the wine and the volcano, and they know the timing cold. For the Akrotiri excavation specifically, an official site guide adds a lot and we can arrange one. In practice most guests book a tour for one day and a driver for another.

Vehicles and practicalities

Air-conditioned Mercedes Sprinters and comparable vans, which matters more than it sounds in August — the island roads are slow and the heat is serious. Child seats are free on request; tell us ages at booking. We are EOT-licensed under 1167E70001128601 and have run this operation from Fira since 2000, which is the relevant qualification when a road is closed for a saint's day and somebody needs to know the alternative. We do not currently operate wheelchair-accessible vehicles. If you need one, say so and we will point you toward a specialist rather than waste your time.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a private driver in Santorini?
From €220 for a three-hour block up to €400 for a full day, priced per vehicle for up to 8 passengers rather than per person. Single point-to-point transfers start at €30.
Is the price per person or per vehicle?
Per vehicle. A family of six pays the same as a couple, which is what makes driver hire competitive against per-person group tours from about three passengers upward.
Will the driver wait while we eat or swim?
Yes. On a private-hire block the driver stays with you for the duration — waiting time is part of the quoted price, not an extra.
Do your drivers speak English?
Yes, all of them, plus Greek. They are driver-hosts rather than licensed archaeological guides; for the Akrotiri site specifically we can arrange an official guide.
Can I hire a driver just for an airport run?
Yes. Point-to-point transfers are priced per route from €30 and include flight tracking and meet-and-greet with a name sign inside arrivals.
Is a driver better than renting a car?
For short stays and for wine days, usually yes — parking in Oia and Fira fills by mid-morning and someone has to stay sober. For a week-long stay where you want total independence, a rental has its merits.
Can you take us somewhere not on the standard routes?
That is rather the point of booking direct. Tell us what you have in mind and we will tell you honestly whether it works, how long it takes, and whether there is a better version of it.
