The cable car is your real constraint
Cruise ships anchor in the caldera and tender passengers to the old port at sea level. From there, Fira is 220 metres straight up. The cable car is the sensible way and it moves roughly 1,200 people an hour — comfortably fewer than a large ship disembarks, and there are often two or three ships in on the same morning.
Queues of 45 to 60 minutes at peak are ordinary. The afternoon descent is usually worse than the morning ascent, because everybody wants to be back aboard within the same half hour. Any shore plan that ignores this fails.
We build the day backwards from your all-aboard time with the downhill queue already costed in, and we would rather return you early with a stop unvisited than run it fine. On the donkeys: we would ask you not to ride them. The welfare conditions have drawn sustained and well-documented criticism, and the 588 steps they share are unpleasant to walk regardless.
Booking independently vs the ship's excursion
Worth being straight about the trade-off, because it is real. If you book through the cruise line and the tour runs late, the ship waits. If you book independently, it does not. That is the entire case for paying the ship's premium, and it is not a silly one.
What you get in exchange for managing that risk is a private vehicle instead of a coach for fifty, an itinerary you choose, and typically a substantially lower cost for a family or small group — our pricing is per vehicle, so four people pay what two do. We handle the risk by reverse-planning from all-aboard with a deliberate buffer and heading back early if a delay develops. In twenty-five years of cruise days we have not missed a ship.

Where do you pick up cruise passengers in Santorini?
At the upper cable-car station in Fira (not at sea level). Your driver holds a name sign. Allow time for the cable car or donkey/mule ascent before meeting us.
How long should a private shore excursion be?
Most cruise guests book 4–6 hours. That covers Oia, a viewpoint village (Pyrgos or Imerovigli), and either a winery or Akrotiri — with buffer to return before all-aboard.
Will I make it back to the ship on time?
Yes. Share your ship name and all-aboard time when booking. We reverse-plan the itinerary and leave a safety buffer for cable-car queues.
What does a private Santorini shore excursion cost?
Same as our private bus tours: from €300 for a 4-hour vehicle and €400 for a full day, priced per vehicle for up to 8 passengers rather than per person. No OTA markup when you book direct.
Is it risky to book independently instead of through the cruise line?
It is the one genuine trade-off. A ship-sold excursion means the ship waits for you; an independent tour does not. If a delay is developing we head back early rather than finishing the itinerary.
How does the cable car work on a cruise day?
Tenders land at the old port and the cable car lifts you 220 metres to Fira. It carries about 1,200 people an hour, which is fewer than a large ship disembarks, so queues of 45–60 minutes are normal at peak. Going down in the afternoon is usually the worse queue.
Should we walk or take the donkeys instead?
Walking up the 588 steps is possible but hot, and the surface is fouled by the donkeys. We would ask you not to ride the donkeys — the welfare conditions have drawn sustained criticism and there have been weight-limit and overwork concerns. Take the cable car and build the queue into your timing.
What if our ship arrives late or the tender is delayed?
Tell us and we adjust. We track arrivals where we can and your driver waits at the cable-car station. A late tender shortens the tour rather than cancelling it, and we prioritise whichever stops matter most to you.
Can you handle a group from the same ship?
Yes. Our vehicles seat up to 8 and we can run several in convoy for larger parties. Booking together is usually far cheaper per person than the ship's own excursion.
