Santorini Taxi: What to Know Before You Land
Santorini has fewer than 40 licensed taxis for the whole island and no Uber, Bolt or Lyft. In July and August that is the single most common way a holiday starts badly. Here is how the taxi system actually works, what it costs, and when a pre-booked transfer is the better call.
How many taxis are there on Santorini?
Fewer than 40, licensed island-wide. That figure is capped by the local authority and has not risen in step with visitor numbers, which now run to roughly two million a year. The arithmetic is unforgiving. A single large ferry into Athinios can put several hundred people onto the quay inside fifteen minutes. Two flights landing together at JTR do much the same. There is no scenario in which the taxi fleet absorbs that, which is why the rank empties within minutes of every arrival wave and why waits of an hour or more are routine rather than exceptional between June and September.

Is there Uber in Santorini?
No. Uber, Bolt, Lyft, Grab and every other ride-hailing app are unavailable on Santorini. Uber does operate in Athens, but only as a way of ordering a licensed taxi, and it does not extend to the islands. This catches out a lot of first-time visitors who plan to sort transport on arrival the way they would in a mainland city. On Santorini there is no app to fall back on: it is a pre-booked transfer, the public bus, a rental vehicle, or the queue.

When a taxi is genuinely fine
We are a transfer company, so treat this section with the appropriate scepticism — but there are cases where flagging a taxi is the sensible choice and we would rather say so. Short hops between villages in the middle of the day, off-season travel, a spontaneous dinner in another town, or any journey where arriving twenty minutes later than planned costs you nothing: a taxi is fine, and often cheaper. The rank in Fira's main square is the most reliable place to find one, and hotels and restaurants will call one for you. Where it stops being fine is anything with a deadline attached — arrivals, departures, ferries, cruise ship all-aboard times — or anything at 06:00, after midnight, or with children and luggage in tow.

Hiring a driver for the day
If you want a vehicle and driver at your disposal rather than a point-to-point transfer, that is a different product and usually better value than stringing taxis together. Our private tours run 3 to 8 hours at a flat rate per vehicle for up to 8 passengers, and the itinerary is yours — wineries, villages, beaches, sunset viewpoints, or simply being driven where you want when you want. A full day works out considerably cheaper than four or five separate taxi journeys, and removes the problem of finding a ride back from somewhere remote at 20:00.
